EP: The Other Side of Hustler
Artist: Davide Squillace & Guti + Carl Cox
Release Date: 24th April
Record Label: This and That Lab
Reviewer: Amy Peat

When you have a talent such as Davide Squillace, it is often hard to understand how to harness it. And so in comes his own forward thinking platform, This and That Lab, which is so much more than just a record label. Based in Barcelona, This and That encompasses all aspects of the modern scene, from music, to art, to fashion

But, looking through their catalogue, what still strikes as their strength is the music, and of course Davide himself strongly features. Their latest release, ‘The Other Side of Hustler’ is in collaboration with Davide’s previous, successful companion, Guti.

If you think the combination of these two talents would be enough, they’ve outdone any expectations to get techno kingpin, Carl Cox as the welcomed third wheel, with a stonker of a remix

The original track is a synth heavy with a determined bassline that endears you to listen. This is interrupted by a strong reverberating vocal, which measures up to the snare kick behind it.

Coxy’s version opens up the lines of bass further, dominating with a masculine bravado that turns heads, much like the man himself. A much meatier track, it improves track flexibility, and would be at home on a dance floor that the previous might not.

It’s not very often that you get nuggets of delight like this, with three DJs who completely live up to your stratospheric expectations. As a fourth release for the label it shows big promise, but of course no one ever really expected anything less.

Despite being so much more than just a record label, Barcelona’s This and That Lab are absolutely nailing it when it comes to releasing music. You might think that by covering such a breadth of topics across the cultural spectrum (they work with various contemporary visual artists from around the world as well as producing videos and providing marketing and advertising campaigns) that they might at times take their eye off the ball when it comes to the actual music.

Not a chance. Just like the three EPs that have come before, their fourth release, “The Other Side of Hustler” is brimming with both originality and quality. But what else would you expect when the undeniable talents of Davide SquillaceGuti and Carl Cox come together on the same EP?!

Good friends Squillace and Guti, now living in the same city since theArgentine’s move to Barcelona, clearly have a great working relationship. 2011’s collaboration “That Ginger Ponytail” was a big success and then there was their joint giveaway on This and That last year with its amazing artwork, which pictured Guti as a slutty nurse and Squillace as a techno astronaut.

They come together only the way they can once again here on “The Other Side of Hustler” injecting heaps of charisma and individuality as they go. It’s a track full of fun, as you might expect from these two, built around a truly infectious and low-slung bassline. Of course there is the innate sense of rhythm too, conjured up through use of clever, live sounding percussion and snappy hi-hats. Skewered vocal chops add a sense of disorientation that only adds to the hypnotic nature of track that you can entirely loose it to.

The original gets a more muscular remix from none other than techno behemoth, Carl Cox. The big man keeps the focus on the bottom end again, but whacks a bigger punch into the bassline, which enables him to keep the track building throughout. It’s bulky groove keeps you locked in for the entirety of its seven minutes.

Another top release from This and That, we already can’t wait to see what comes out of the Lab next. No matter what platform or media it is centered on, we can say with almost total confidence that it will be ace once again.

London Warehouse Events talks to Davide Squillace http://thisandthatlab.com/news/london-warehouse-project-talks-to-davide-squillace http://thisandthatlab.com/news/london-warehouse-project-talks-to-davide-squillace#comments Tue, 16 Apr 2013 17:41:41 +0000 admin http://thisandthatlab.com/?p=1082 LWE meets up with Davide Squillace to chat ahead of This and That’s London invasion @ Village Underground on April 27! Read the piece below or on their website

—————

The Village Underground will hold host to Davide Squillace’s This and That night on 27/04/13. With Dorian Paic on the lineup, this is a must for fans of London’s thriving House and Techno scene. Refusing to follow the boundaries This and That is a tool that is harnessing the talent of producers, visual artists and ultimately artistic creativity. The night is set to break down presumptions about the music, as Squillace gives his take on our beloved genre. We spoke to Davide ahead of this highly anticipated event taking place in East London.

What has been the ethos behind the This and That project as a creative project?
The driving force behind This and That has always been creativity. The whole project is built on a bunch of different artists working together to create a synergy of different medias. It’s not just about music. Music is the first product of our output, but we combine that with work from visual artists from around the world who produce paintings, drawings and videos etc. We are also working on advertising and marketing campaigns too. So it is a varied project, which keeps things very exciting. It is more than just a record label. It is a think tank that embraces art, media and culture as a whole.

Has it been a hard task grabbing musicians, artists and visual artists under the same creative umbrella?
It is hard work, but all that work and energy that we put into the project is ultimately repaid by the end result. It is very rewarding to see the results of something when it is finished. Working on a project of this scale is ambitious and takes a lot of dedication behind the scenes, but that only makes it seem all the more rewarding when we take step back after a project or campaign and actually take a look at what we created. In terms of managing all the artists we work with, this side of things is very easy. We like to give all our artists total creative freedom to do only what they want to. We are not big on rules or specifications here; we just leave the artists to get on with what they are best at. That keeps the whole creative process running smoothly and allows us to operate at the highest quality too.

What have been the biggest influences on your style of production?
Inspiration comes from a lot of different places for me. I can be inspired and influenced by a whole host of things from every day life. Although my experiences may make me head to the studio, things can change quickly once I start working in my studio. I can play around with different things, start to explore different avenues and then the music just starts to take shape. So music can end up sounding very different from the thing that inspired you to make that music. Each track I make is a collection of happy little accidents.

How has your sound evolved since you first got into making music
My sound has definitely evolved, like it should for all producers, but this has happened in a natural way. Back in the day when this techno thing was really big in Napoli, I pushed myself to make that kind of music. It felt like a struggle and although I put some records out, I was not too happy with the way it was going. Then I started to make music free of these constraints and just follow my own personal desires. This is when I truly started to become a true producer in my eyes. Since then I don’t think I have had a clearly defined style really. Each release is different from the next. I think I would become bored if I didn’t work in this way.

How important was the London scene to you when you moved here?
When I lived in London I became exposed to lots of new types of music, which was great as it helped broaden my musical horizon. It was that which had the biggest impact on me from my time there. Even now when I go back to London I try to see some great bands, singers and instrumentalists and stuff. London will always be at the forefront of pushing new and exciting sounds, so it is great for any producer to experience that first hand.

What has been your most memorable experience as a DJ?
For sure, my highlight would be that i have had the opportunity to be a resident DJ at DC 10.
My favourite part about it, is that it collects music lovers from all around the world and they enjoy everything we play, its a special place.

Most rewarding thing about what you do?
The most rewarding thing about being a DJ and producer is making other people happy. Whether it is playing at a club, festival, whatever or releasing music, it’s seeing that reaction from the people who take it in that provides the real kick. That’s not to say that I play what I think the crowd wants to hear though. I have belief in my own ability to stick to my own principles whilst also entertaining the people that come to see me.

When you are at the club, out of all your DJ friends, who do you have the most fun with?
Wow, its definitely a long list.. I mean Massimo my tour manager, Guti, Martin , Mathias, System of Survival, Andrea, Antonio, Mila, Vito, my team.. its endless , my apologizes if i have forgotten anybody.. its really an infinite list. It’s like when you are at the Golden Globe awards and you have to give your acceptance speech.. I thank this person, and so on and you forget people.. It’s just too long to list.. heehee!

Davide Squillace & Guti – The Other Side Of Hustler, remixed by Carl Cox [TnT004] http://thisandthatlab.com/news/davide-squillace-guti-the-other-side-of-hustler-remixed-by-carl-cox-tnt004 http://thisandthatlab.com/news/davide-squillace-guti-the-other-side-of-hustler-remixed-by-carl-cox-tnt004#comments Thu, 11 Apr 2013 16:05:40 +0000 admin http://thisandthatlab.com/?p=1079 This and That’s enigmatic back catalogue is enhanced once again on their fourth release; this time by the formidable trio of Davide Squillace, Guti and Carl Cox.

Following on from the success of their 2011 collaboration, ‘That Ginger Ponytail’, good friends Davide Squillace and Guti got in the studio together for another trailblazing session behind the desk. Seemingly having even more fun than last time around, the pair clearly enjoyed bringing out the eccentricities of each other’s personalities on this track. The result is a record that is both fun and groovy; underground yet still insatiably infectious. ‘The Other Side Of Hustler’ is built around a wildly loose and funky bassline that underpins the entire track. There’s a real fluidity to the tune, due in no small part to the producers’ deft ability at allowing the deep bassline to run with freedom alongside some untamed drumming whilst also retaining the track’s clear narrative.

On the flip, This and That are delighted to welcome Carl Cox into the family with his dope remix of the title track. Stripping things back somewhat, Carl replaces the funk of the original with a building sense of tension, constructed with dub-like bass stabs. The subtle groove works towards a climax that although threatens with skewered synths and crisp hi-hats, never actually spills over.

Galleria Fonti’s Birgit Megerle provides the intriguing artwork for this release. The Berlin based artist has won wide acclaim for her abstract and passionate style, an aesthetic that is on display as  she joins the This and That family with this great piece.

Such a great and passionate review by We Are You for our upcoming release by Davide Squillace & Guti, featuring a Carl Cox remix! Read below or on We Are You website

————

Our most hotly anticipated release for the month of April

It seems like an absolute age since I first heard details about This And That Lab’s fourth release. I am pretty sure it was before the turn of the year that info started to come through, not sure how I still have all my hair. On duty are label boss Davide Squillace and good friend Guti. The inclusion of a remix from the legend that is Carl Cox is a huge coup, and probably something that will bring the TnT brand to a much bigger audience. From what I have gathered, Mr Squillace wants his label to grow organically and develop a life of its own. He has refrained from using his own status to milk as much publicity as he can, instead opting for a more gorilla approach, which is way more fun anyway! All we have been treated to thus far is Youtube clips of either Squillace or Guti playing the track at gigs, and I have to say it has been very frustrating in that really cool way that is very seldom happens these days. Maybe some of you wont remember what it was like to have a DJ play a track on test pressing and then us mortals have to wait 6-8 months for it to be released of vinyl. A producer would want it to be played out a good while before they would commit to pressing it on vinyl, so the promo time was way longer. The fact that more labels are pressing to vinyl again means that there is a possibility the buzz could return, at long last!

For all the fans of the label’s sound, the original of “The Other Side Of Hustler” is vintage Squillace with that new raw twist that Guti brings to the table. The emphasis is firmly placed on the low slung, almost sexual, bassline and of course the percussion has a real live feel to it. Snappy vocal stabs help give a human touch and adds even more sporadic rhythm before the main vocal refrain tears in our souls. A duel between male and female, and almost incoherent, it brings an element of darkness to proceedings. It conjures up an image of Ibiza for me, Davide behind the controls of DC10 with Sunglasses on and cigarette in hand. Working the mixer while he dances about with that Squillace swagger.

I will be the first to admit that despite his legend status behind the decks, for me Carl Cox has never met the same standard with his productions. Well with this remix, Carl is seriously flipping me the bird. It has a bigger sound than the original, which of course suits the big man to a tee. The arrangement is simple but its biggest asset is balls. Again the focus is on bottom end here and believe me when I say the bassline is so beefy, it stinks the place out. There is an old skool vive with some of the stabs and drums, which lends to Carl’s taste and gives it some identity. This mix will probably get more airtime from bigger DJs due to who has remixed it and its “straight in no kissing” approach but the original gets my vote due to its almost cocky nature and sleazy undertone.

Sexy, twisted house music made for dark rooms and sunny terraces alike.
